Baby Care and Breastfeeding Room from EMU Students

Within the framework of the social organisation course, students of Eastern Mediterranean University Faculty of Education and Faculty of Tourism introduced another social responsibility project. As a result of the project which was carried out as part of ‘THRM 223- Social Responsibility Organisations’, an elective course offered by Tourism Faculty,  the Baby Care and Breastfeeding Room in Famagusta State Hospital was improved. The official opening of the room took place at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 14 December 2016. Famagusta Kale Lions Club Chair Dr. Suna Hasipoğlu and Famagusta State Hospital Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Umut Altunç delivered speeches.

The project took place under the supervision of EMU Community Involvement Center Executive Board member Assist. Prof. Dr. Nazenin Ruso, with the support of Famagusta Kale Lions Club and through active involvement of students Gizem Koyun, Gizem Şahin, Damla Kuru, Nilay Güncan and Nebil Salamah. Students who participated in the project stated that they intiated the project to establish a playroom for children receiving treatment at the said hospital. However, they later found out that there is one already. They, then, had a meeting with Famagusta State Hospital Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Umut Altunç and took his recommendation of improving the baby care and breastfeeding room in the hospital. The students expressed their happiness in partaking in a project as such and extended their gratitude and appreciation for the active support of Famagusta Kale Lions Club, Dr. Suna Hasipoğlu and Dr. Umut Altunç.

In her speech at the official opening of the said room, Famagusta Kale Lions Club Chair Dr. Suna Hasipoğlu stated that they wanted both mothers and babies to be happy in the breastfeeding room. Kale Lions Club’s noteworth contributions are very important in this respect. Their selfless efforts in supporting less lucky people than us are appreciated. Dr. Hasipoğlu concluded her speech by thanking all those who supported the project.

After Hasipoğlu, Famagusta State Hospital Pediatric Health and Diseases Specialist Umut Altunç also delivered a speech during which he stated that the former  baby care and breastfeeding room at their hospital was not in a good condition.  Dr. Altunç thanked students of EMU and Lions Club for their support.
