EMU is organizing “ International Problematic Soils Conference – 2005”
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) Department of Civil Engineering organized the “International Conference on Problematic Soils – 2005”. The conference took place at Salamis Bay Conti Hotel on May 25-27, 2005. The three day conference began with the opening ceremony which was scheduled to start at 9:30 on May 25 th with the opening speeches delivered by EMU Rector Prof.Dr.Halil Güven, Soil Mechanics Turkish National Committee General Secretary Prof. Dr. Feyza Çinicioglu, Unsaturated Soils Technical Committee Chair (International Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineers Association) Prof. Dr. Eduardo Alonso and the conference convener Assist. Prof. Dr. Huriye Bilsel.
According to information released by EMU, the International Problematic Soils 2005 Conference was organized by Assist. Prof. Dr Huriye Bilsel and Assist. Prof.Dr Zalihe Nalbantoglu from the Civil Engineering Department and that 65 scholars from 26 different countries and 7 keynote speakers presented papers at the conference.
The issues discussed in the conference were as such: the mechanical characteristics of unsaturated soils, the chemical and mechanical characteristics of soils, soil contamination caused by chemical and biological wastes, expansive and swelling soils, collapsible soils, stabilization methods in soils, the behavior of soils under dynamic loads and liquification, and samples from realized projects.
According to the Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren, the Chair of the Civil Engineering Department, the conference proceedings will be collected in three volumes and will be at the service of those interested in the area.
