2006-2007 EMU Academic Year has begun.
26 September 2006, Famagusta (T.A.K): The 2006-2007 Eastern Mediterranean University Academic year has started today with an opening ceremony.
EMU Board of Trustees Director Çimen Varer Öztürk with the administrative board members, EMU vice-rectors, Financial and technical affairs vice-rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Dağbaşı, Zeynel Yeşilada on behalf of the TR support committee, faculty deans, teaching staff and students attended the ceremony at 10:00 in the EMU Activity center.
After a minute of silence the opening ceremony started with the national anthem and followed with a concert. The ceremony continued with EMU Student Affairs vice-rector Assist. Prof. Dr. Şamil Erdoğan’s opening speech, on behalf of the president and was followed by Prof. Dr. Vamık Volkan’s “Opening Lesson” speech. The ceremony presented Prof. Dr. Volkan a “Life Long Success award” and ended with a folk dancing performance.
Erdoğan
In the frame of the YÖDAK approach, EMU Prof Dr. Halil Güven was found present in Istanbul today and before EMU Student Affairs rector-advisor Assist. Prof. Dr. Şamil Erdoğan delivered the opening speech, he read a message by the president for the new academic year.
Erdoğan implied that today EMU with students from 59 countries has started its 28th year of education. He also stated that EMU has now given more than 23 thousand graduates.
Erdoğan indicated that they entered the new academic year with approximately 16 thousand students and besides this, as being an EMU administrator, improvements and new facilities will be put forward for students.
In this frame, Erdoğan said that the new facilities will be as; chipped ID’s for students, student facility centers, new cafeterias and newly constructed dormitories, where the bed capasity at the school has now reached 4 thousand 947. He also stated that in the protocol he set with the Minister of Health, registered students on behalf of the university, have been given health insurance.
As a result to meetings conducted with Famagusta landlords by the EMU, Şamil Erdoğan gave first priority to the formation of KISDER. He also stated and believed that in this way students’ life conditions will be made easy.

stated that everyone who shares EMU should love and protect EMU. He also
stated that they will be continuously working for the EMU to reach quality.
Erdoğan also wished a delightful and successful 2006-07 Academic year.
Volkan
In his first lesson speech for the new academic year Prof. Dr. Vamık Volkan placed forward his beliefs to “Identity, people who kill each other due to identity, devolution in the society and developments in Cyprus”. Volkan, at first, referred to the identity issue and said people have identity conflicts and kill each other. He gave the Israel and Arabian country wars and the struggle period years of Cyprus as an example.
Vamık Volkan explained that in the period of the Cyprus events people killed each other not because of personal reasons but because of their identity. Volkan stressed that in those years his brother was also killed because he was a Turkish Cypriot.
Good relation among countries and good relationships among country leaders for peace besides the importance of being “You and Me” were also emphasized by Volkan.
In this way, he stated that any type of problem between the countries will be solved.
Volkan states that he witnessess an increasing environment problem every time he visits North Cyprus. In this sense, he stresses that more importance should be given to the interior affairs in the administration and that the environment should be kept clean.
Vamık Volkan, said that the society should increase their responsibility towards the environment and lastly presented his wish as “lets create a clean North Cyprus” (T.A.K)
