Prof. Dr. Pedro Lourtie’s Seminar On Performance Evaluation

Prof. Dr. Pedro Lourtie from Lisbon University Mechanical Engineering Department has been invited to Northern Cyprus by YÖDAK to give a seminar on “Academic Staff Performance Evaluation Criteria.

During his opening speech, Prof. Dr. Hasan A.Bıçak, Chair of YÖDAK, introduced Prof. Dr. Pedro Lourtie and indicated that performance evaluation of academic staff is an indispensable part of quality assurance in institutions of higher education. Prof. Dr. Hasan A.Bıçak also added that performance evaluation has a positive effect on the quality of education. According to Prof. Bıçak, the main aim of performance evaluation is to show each academic staff member their existing performance in class.

During his presentation Prof. Dr. Lourtie stated that motivation and evaluation are the two  important factors in increasing staff members’ performance. Prof. Dr. Lourtie indicated that they employ specific criteria in the evaluation of academic staff members such as teaching effectiveness, research, serving the community and contributions in the administrative areas. Lourtie added that in the evaluation of teaching effectiveness, they put focus on each academic staff member’s pedagogical talents, student motivation and course content.

Prof. Dr. Lourtie put forth that in the evaluation of the academic performance at his institution, the weight of teaching effectiveness ranges from 20% to 40% whereas the evaluation of research activities varies between 40% and 60%. The weight of information transfer, on the other hand, ranges from 5% to 30%.  Lourtie also expressed that academic staff performance evaluation takes place every three years in their institution and depending on the results of the evaluation, permanent staff members who demonstrate successful performance gain the right for a full-contract. Other successful staff members who are on temporary contractual status gain an extension in their contract. Successful academic staff members also gain a salary increment based on their success  rate. Prof. Dr. Lourtie stated that staff members who fail to demonstrate successful academic performance do not gain the right for a full contract.

On 4 March, Prof. Dr. Pedro Lourtie also provided further information about performance evaluation to a small group from the Rector’s Office.
