Department Mission

In today's globalized world where cultures get to interact more frequently and yet insist on preserving their special characteristics; where numerous and diverse products and services are put in circulation daily; and where the environmental and ethical problems that result from the production and presentation of these products and services go head-to-head; for-profit companies as well as public institutions and organizations allocate increasing resources to public relations and advertising activities. They want these resources, which are meant to efficiently handle their relations with legislators, consumers, civil society organizations, or public institutions or organizations, to be managed by communication experts who are specialists in the field, who are responsible both to their organizations and the society of which they are a part, and who can make informed decisions. Within this framework, the Department of Public Relations and Advertising at Eastern Mediterranean University aims to educate and train ethically responsible and creative communication experts who are skilled in the use of the latest technological and managerial tools, and who have the theoretical knowledge and background to meet the changing needs of the related sectors.

Distinguishing Attributes

The Department provides the students with a strong base on theoretical foundations, where they also have the chance to put into application what they have learned over the years with their Public Relations and Advertising projects. Consequently, students apply and learn from their applications basic techniques and methods such as creative script writing, desktop publishing, graphic design, market research, customer representation, integrated marketing, marketing for public relations, political campaign design and campaign design in general. Students, with elective courses taken from other departments, can also develop a multi-dimensional approach to the industry requirements. As a result, students can develop a portfolio including the projects they have designed and the numerous entries to national/international competitions, which in turn would give them the upper hand in search of employment.

Department Facilities

The Public Relations and Advertising Project Center, based in the Department, provides the students opportunities for learning integrated marketing communication and public relations and advertising campaigns starting with research and applying what they have learned regarding goals, strategic planning and creativity, and developing tactics. The Center, which functions as a practical workshop, provides the students with the experience they need by developing professional projects in collaboration with the sector. The Center is also significant in that the projects accomplished in the center have won different awards in international and national competitions.

Quality of Graduates

The students who graduate from the Public Relations and Advertising Department will be equipped with the theoretical and practical knowledge of the industry and will be able to apply their erudition from public relations, advertising to marketing communication, from planning to production and to application. Therefore, students will be able to take part in every stage of a project and be able to bring the theory into practice. Students will have grasped the profession's social, economical, ethical, and legal aspects by the time of graduation. Additionally, students will have the privilege to be taught in an English medium of instruction and also be exposed to a multi-cultural academic environment.

Job Opportunities

Students who graduate from the program get to work as public relations and advertising specialists in private firms, information offices, local administrations, or public institutions and organizations. Their work ranges from taking part in central strategic planning of firms, to working in departments like customer relations, strategic creativity, market research or media planning. Additionally, jobs ranging from international and national financial institutions to travel agencies await our graduates. Furthermore, our graduates also find work in the information, customer relations, public relations and advertising departments of media institutions like newspapers, magazines, radios, and televisions.
