Program Mission

Psychology is an exciting and challenging field of study and has recently been added to the list of programs offered by Eastern Mediterranean University . As one of the principal fields of behavioral sciences, psychology involves the study of human behavior in biological, social, and historical contexts. Psychological knowledge has a wide range of applications such as helping individuals to learn how to deal with their personal problems and stress, educational and occupational counseling, individual and family therapy, increasing productivity and job satisfaction in work settings, education, public relations, advertising, etc.

The Program in Psychology offers courses leading to Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, and elective courses to other departments of the university.

Students will be trained:

  • to explore links between theory and practice
  • to examine the historical development of the theories including their origins in philosophical and social thought
  • to examine recent research evaluating the effects of psychological processes on different sub-fields
  • to explore the multidisciplinary influence that has shaped modern psychological perspectives and researches
  • to develop methodological and statistical knowledge acquired through research methods training
  • to provide the foundation for interpretation and critical discussion of published psychological research

Opportunities Offered

Existing computer and audio-visual technology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences will be available for the psychology students as well. In addition, books and journals on psychology issues will be available to the students for updating their knowledge in this discipline.

Distinguishing Attributes

The academic staff of the program are passionate about the subjects they teach. It is therefore quite natural that they engage in research in their areas of interest. As active researchers, many staff require the participation of students for their own experiments. In some cases, these researches are funded by national and/or international organizations. In addition, research activities bring income that will contribute to resources that students are able to use.

Quality of Graduates

Psychology students will go through the following stages in order to hold the title of professional psychologist:

  • a four year 'first phase' leading to a Bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification)
  • a one or two year 'second phase' leading to a Master's degree (or equivalent qualification)
  • a one year period of supervised practice

Job Opportunities

Those students graduating from the Psychology undergraduate program will hold a BS degree and may work in different public or private sectors, such as educational institutions, industry, human resources, public policy, business or any field that requires an understanding of behavior, or competence in conducting empirical research and analyzing data.
