Department Mission
The Department of Journalism aims to train future journalists, who are determined to be ethical in the profession, equipped with social responsibility, defending the importance and necessity of freedom of the press, able to analyze current issues from a sociological, economical, cultural and political viewpoint, and last but not least bilingual, in the national/international media avenue.
Towards achieving this goal, the curriculum will provide students with the opportunity to have practical knowledge on newsgathering and writing; conducting interviews; research and analysis; investigative journalism; newspaper design and layout; online publishing; and radio-TV journalism. However, additional to practical courses and opportunities provided for the students, the Department also offers theoretical courses such as Communication Theories, Cultural Studies, Media Research, Communication Ethics and Law so that the student will possess the ability to think critically. The Department provides the students with a multi-dimensional education and believes in the fact that theory cannot be separated from practice. Moreover, the Department features an academic team from American, European and Turkish Universities , in turn providing the students with an unmatched quality of modern education.
Distinguishing Attributes
The Department of Journalism aims to educate “investigative journalists” for modern-thinking, observant and responsible media institutions of our time. With this aim considered, the multi-dimensional curriculum has been prepared to balance theory with practical aspects of journalism. The Media Center , which has been established as a practical avenue for the students by the Faculty, trains students to prepare news in different formats with a holistic understanding of the principles of journalism. In this respect, the news which is prepared by the students is distributed to Radio EMU, EMU-TV, Gündem Newspaper and GündemNet. Furthermore, the Department features a multicultural team of academics coming from different parts of the world with different backgrounds.
Department Facilities
Traditional approaches toward journalism have been changing with the latest developments in technology. Keeping this in mind, the Department constantly upgrades its curriculum and makes it more feasible for the students' expectations. For example, Desktop Publishing and Online Journalism are two courses, which would require the students to use the latest technology. Additionally, the students are able to convert their knowledge, which they have gained during courses, into practical execution at the Media Center , Gündem Newspaper and GündemNet. Moreover, the students can also become “student assistants” and contribute toward their education financially and also gain professional experience.
Quality of Graduates
The graduates of the Department of Journalism are equipped with the theoretical and practical knowledge of the industry. Students, upon graduation, will be able to analyze national and international news, approach them with ethical responsibility and an investigative mind. Moreover, graduates will be able to use the latest technology in publishing and be positively effective in changing the content of the news in any publication they work for. For example, students prepare a newspaper from content to layout and publish it on their own. Gündem Newspaper and GündemNet are both published regularly with this mentality in mind.
Job Opportunities
ournalism students who graduate from a program which has been designed to expand their horizons, can easily find jobs as reporters, as graphic designers, news managers or publication directors at national and local newspapers, magazines and online publications. Journalism graduates can also work in the private sector, NGOs, local governments or in the public sector, which operates in a traditional or desktop publishing medium. When considering the increase in public relations activities through media as well as company-sponsored publications, there are wide varieties of job prospects for journalism graduates in the insurance industry, aviation industry, associations, societies, sports clubs, and online news sites. |
