Department Mission
Being well aware of the
increasing global role of the English language in the modern
world, the basic aim of the Department of English Language
Teaching (ELT) of the Faculty of Education, Eastern
Mediterranean University (EMU), is to train the students to make
them well-qualified English teachers.
We know quite well that
teacher training in general, and training foreign language
teachers in particular, is a long-term professional undertaking;
accordingly, we employ every means to update our graduate and
undergraduate programs to train well-equipped teachers who will
meet the required standards and contribute to the research in
the field. And as a department we spare no effort to raise the
standards of teacher training in ELT in keeping with the demands
of the 21st century.
Department Facilities
The department, with its distinguished staff, national and
international academic activities, technological infrastructure
and facilities helps the students to integrate with the modern
world of education. We provide our students with every possible
opportunity to improve their language skills and to be educated
as modern language teachers. Within the department, there are
small groups led by the teaching assistants of the department to
encourage the students to improve their speaking skills. We also
provide practice teaching opportunities for our teacher
candidates in collaboration with the EMU schools and the
Ministry of Education to help them develop their teaching
skills. Moreover, all modern teaching equipment such as
audio-visual aids, videos, computers available in the Faculty of
Education are at the disposal of our students.
Quality of Graduates
The department trains its students primarily as English Language
Teachers. However, in addition to working as English Language
Teachers at various levels in secondary schools, they also
possess the right qualifications to pursue their careers as
communication experts, translators or linguists.
Distinguishing Attributes
Since its establishment,
the ELT Department has given priority to the employment of the
most distinguished people in their fields in order to have the
best ELT staff. In addition to this, the ELT Department has
updated its BA and MA curricula, and is currently playing a
leading role in its uncompromising approach to quality.
The ELT Department is
having a leadership in the undertaking of quality research and
in training prominent scholars through the opening of its
doctoral program which will help the field of ELT to advance
through research. By means of international ELT conferences, it
is made possible for the academic staff members and the students
to meet scholars who are important in their fields and discuss
the new issues. The best example of this was experienced during
the ELT Conference in 2001. The conference book was published by
Lincom Europa in Germany in 2004.
The academic staff members are also submitting projects and
providing advisory services to the Ministry of Education in
curriculum development, testing and in-service training areas of
ELT.
Job Opportunities
Graduates of the department are entitled to be appointed as
English language teachers at every level in the Ministry of
Education. Besides, if they fulfill the requirements, they can
continue their MA and PhD studies in the department or else they
can be employed as translators, communication experts and
teaching advisors at private teaching institutions..
English Club
An English Language Club was established in the department in
2003 spring semester by our senior students, so as to provide
our students with new opportunities to improve their speaking
skills outside regular class work. Another objective of the club
is to organize seminars and workshops inviting specialists in
the field from EMU and abroad to help students improve their
academic knowledge, to inform them about the summer schools and
graduate education abroad, and also to give them the opportunity
to mix with each other through social activities. |
