Special Education Center

Every human being is born with a particular structure and physical characteristics. On the condition that when differences appear within inappropriate conditions, then, disabilities come up such as mental, visual, hearing or orthopedic impairment; learning difficulties; adaptation, speech and language impairment; development disorders; any school failures; loss of attention and hyperactive behavior disorders. Disabled individuals require special education. Specialists who have experience on this issue carry out this particular special education through special programs and methods.

Scientific researches conducted on this issue pointed out that special education need in the country is approximately between 12% to 14%. All these considered, it is obvious that in the TRNC where 200.000 individuals live, almost 26.000 of them need a special education. In considering the parents and relatives of these people, the number of individuals who need special education cannot be underestimated.

Whether demographic results, democracy in education and equal opportunities or humanist approach are considered, it becomes clear that special education is vital and highly important. Also, if we think of each individual’s capability to achieve something in life and continue his/her life after appropriate education, the contribution of these people to economy can’t be underestimated. Several countries see the importance given to special education as a sign of development.

One of the most important objectives of a university is to work on the needs of its surroundings and to promote the socio-economic status and welfare of the population. As special education in the TRNC was not at the level it should be, works to establish a Special Education Center at EMU started and the Center was opened soon after the project took off the ground.

Although Special Education Center will work to meet the needs of the public, currently, it is planned to treat children who have behavior disorders, loss of attention, hyperactivity, adaptation problem, learning difficulties, speech and language impairments, developmental regression and mental disabilities. In the future, however, the development of special education in every field will be considered.
